Pena,Guilherme Ferreira; Amaral Júnior,Antonio Teixeira do; Gonçalves,Leandro Simões Azeredo; Vivas,Marcelo; Ribeiro,Rodrigo Moreira; Mafra,Gabrielle Sousa; Santos,Adriano dos; Scapim,Carlos Alberto.
ABSTRACT The use of topcross has proven to be an interesting option for the maize crop; however, for the popcorn, there is little information about the choice of the appropriate tester. In this context, this study aimed to analyze four testers including two open pollinated varieties(BRS Angela and UENF-14), one topcross hybrid (IAC125) and a line (P2), to evaluate the combining ability of 50 S3 families of popcorn, obtained from the UENF-14 variety. Popcorn families were evaluated for grain yield (GY) and popping expansion (PE). The estimates of general and specific combining abilities were obtained and the discrimination of each tester through differentiation index was carried out. The testers BRS Angela (for GY) and IAC 125 (for PE) were the most...

Miotto,Acácio Antonio; Pinto,Ronald José Barth; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Matias Junior,José Lidércio; Coan,Marlon Mathias Dacal; Silva,Hingrid Ariane da.
ABSTRACT Thirty-eight S3 families obtained by selfing from IAC-125 popcorn hybrid were evaluated by three different topcross tester parents: an inbred line P3.3- S7 generation taken from popcorn population CMS-42, an open-pollinated variety BRS Angela and the commercial three-way hybrid Jade. Manual crossings were performed according to a partial diallel mating design. Topcross hybrids were evaluated in individual experiments for each tester carried out in randomized block designs with three replications in two locations (Maringá-Paraná and Sabáudia-Paraná). The results for grain yield and popping expansion were gathered in a combined analysis. Estimates of general and specific combining ability were obtained according to Griffing's methodology (1956),...

In maize, variations on agronomic performance in distinct environments are common and more evident for one-way hybrids. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of new one-way popcorn hybrids developed by the Breeding Program of the State University of Maringá, in northwestern Paraná. The characteristics evaluated were: grain yield, popping expansion, plant height, ear height and the intensity of Southern rust (Puccinia polysora), Northern leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum), and phaeosphaeria leaf spot (Phaeosphaeria maydis/Pantoea ananas). The assay was carried out into randomized block design with three replications in Maringá, state of Paraná, Brazil, during the 2006/2007 cropping season. The treatments were 27 simple popcorn hybrids...

Evaluation of Top-Cross Popcorn Hybrids Using Mixed Linear Model Methodology Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Arnhold,Emmanuel; Mora,Freddy; G. Silva,Ricardo; I.V. Good-God,Pedro; Rodovalho,Marcos A.
The market for popcorn (Zea mays L.) has been continuously growing in Brazil fact has required the development of cultivars adapted to local environmental conditions. For this reason, the analytical objectives of this study were to evaluate top-cross popcorn hybrids in relation to popping expansion and grain yield in three different eco-geographic regions of Brazil, in order to estimate variance components using Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) and predict breeding values using Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP). Genetic evaluation considered a linear model with heterogeneous residual (environmental) variances. The Restricted Likelihood Ratio Test (RLRT) evidenced significant differences (p < 0.01) for the genotypic effect. Grain yield showed a...

Santos, Fabrício Santana; UENF; Amaral Júnior, Antonio Teixeira do; UENF; Freitas Júnior, Silvério de Paiva; UENF; Rangel, Ramon Macedo; UENF; Scapim, Carlos Alberto; UEM; Mora, Freddy; UEM.
Although Brazil has reduced its importation of popcorn grain in recent years, the availability of improved varieties is still rare. In order to improve a popcorn population and to estimate the prediction of genetic gains, the third cycle of intrapopulation recurrent selection was carried out. One hundred ninety two half-sib families were obtained from the second cycle of the UNB-2U population and tested in a randomized complete block design with two replications within sets in two locations. The presence of statistical significance for sets for grain yield, poorly husked ear and broken plants proved the efficiency and the necessity for the use of the hierarchical statistical model by sets. Except for the poorly husked ear, there was significance for...

Genetic progress in popcorn recurrent selection by a multivariate mixed-model approach Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ematné,Hugo Junqueira; Nunes,José Airton Rodrigues; Souza,João Cândido de; Muñoz,Patrício Ricardo.
ABSTRACT Recurrent selection is a viable alternative for popcorn breeding. However, frequent verification of progress attained is required. The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic progress attained for popping expansion (PE) and grain yield (GY) after four cycles of recurrent selection and to compare this progress with the expected progress estimated at the end of each cycle while considering the genetic relationships between the progenies via univariate and multivariate mixed-model approaches. To estimate the genetic parameters and gains from indirect selection, cycles 1, 2, 3, and 4 of a UFLA population were used. To estimate the genetic gains achieved, the following cycles were used: UFLA (original) and cycles 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4, evaluated in...

Genetic progress of phenotypic recurrent selection in popcorn Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ematné,Hugo Junqueira; Souza,João Cândido de; Biudes,Gustavo Barnabé; Nunes,José Airton Rodrigues; Guedes,Fernando Lisboa.
Popcorn is widely consumed in the south of Minas Gerais; however, up to now no specific breeding program for the region has been carried out. Recurrent selection (RS) is a viable alternative for breeding of this crop; nevertheless, it is necessary to frequently evaluate the progress achieved. Consequently, the purpose of this work was to assess the genetic progress obtained after two cycles of RS for the traits of popping expansion (PE) and grain yield (GY). Cycles one and two of the UFLA - E and UFLA - R populations, the original population (UFLA) and two controls were assessed. The experiment was conducted at the UFLA experimental farm in a randomized block design with eleven replications; ten agronomic traits, including PE and GY, were assessed. Gains...

Vieira, Rafael Augusto; UEM; Souza Neto, Israel Leite; UEM; Bignotto, Lucas Souto; UEM; Cruz, Cosme Damião; UFV; Amaral Júnior, Antonio Teixeira do; UENF; Scapim, Carlos Alberto; UEM.
Six popcorn varieties were crossed in a diallel mating scheme to obtain 15 F1 hybrids, with the purpose of analyzing the estimates of heterotic parametrization for agronomically important traits. The genitors and hybrids were evaluated in randomized block design with three replications in Viçosa and Visconde do Rio Branco, in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in three growing seasons. Six traits were evaluated, including grain yield and popping expansion. There were highly significant effects for treatments, varieties and mean heterosis for plant and ear heights, and for the others traits the significance extended to all sources of variation. Amarela and Viçosa revealed superiority for grain yield in relation to performance per se, while Rosa Claro expressed the...

Inbreeding depression and genetic components for popping expansion and other traits in Brazilian populations of popcorn Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Arnhold,Emmanuel; Soriano Viana,José Marcelo; Mora,Freddy; Vieira Miranda,Glauco; Gonçalves Silva,Ricardo.
The aim of the study was to assess inbreeding depression and determine genetic components in landrace populations of popcorn. Six Brazilian popcorn landraces: Amarelo, Beija-Flor, Branco, Rosa-claro, Roxo and Viçosa, were subjected to self-pollination. Experiments with SO populations and their selfing populations (SI) were conducted in a randomized complete block design. The estimates of inbreeding depression varied from 1.2% (popping expansion) to 79% (grain yield). The gene action was predominantly additive for plant height, ear height and hundred-grain-weight. The dominance genetic effects were important for index of prolificacy and grain yield. The genetic effect of popping expansion was bidirectional with nuil dominance and a predominance of additive...

Recurrent selection in inbred popcorn families Scientia Agricola
Daros,Máskio; Amaral Jr.,Antônio Teixeira do; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga; Santos,Fabrício Santana; Gabriel,Ana Paula Cândido; Scapim,Carlos Alberto; Freitas Jr.,Silvério de Paiva; Silvério,Lucas.
Although much appreciated in Brazil, commercial popcorn is currently cropped on a fairly small scale. A number of problems need to be solved to increase production, notably the obtaintion of seeds with good agronomic traits and good culinary characteristics. With the objective of developing superior genotypes in popcorn, a second cycle of intrapopulation recurrent selection based on inbred S1 families was carried out. From the first cycle of selection over the UNB-2U population, 222 S1 families were obtained, which were then divided into six sets and evaluated in a randomized complete block design with two replications within the sets. Experiments were carried out in two Brazilian localities. The analysis of variance revealed environmental effects for all...
